Hey guys, growing up all I ever wanted was to help people. I was so interested in people and medicine that I just knew I was going to be a doctor! I did all the research for several years during high school. After developing some problems I wondered how bad med school would be on me. I started to question what I want out of life.
At the start of the semester I had decided on Nursing. Then, if I was confident and wanted I could still go to med school. However, I have questioned this for many reasons. More than anything I want to help people. All types of people, mostly children/teens, but also adults... I just want to help, period.
So, I did more research (I put in a lot of research for anything I do!) and this time I looked at Sociology, Psychology, and Social Work. Well, I love psychology and know a lot about it. I am very involved in that field as well. I love my sociology class, but it isn't as specific as I would like it to be.
So, I have decided that I am going to major in Social Work and minor in Sociology because there are a ton of things I can do with those degrees. I want to do counseling, help children, mental health, and keep kids on track. I feel VERY strongly towards children being on the right path at a young age because those children are America's adults. I want to start helping as young as possible, as soon as possible, and make sure children are in the right environment, etc...
Also, I want to specifically work with GLBT youth. That is another emphasis I wish to place on my major. I am doing lots of research and I think living as a GLBT individual helps put me in the persective. I want to help people like myself and I feel I can do a lot of good in the world.
If I had to pick the strongest passion or will within myself...it would absolutely be my need to help people. I love it and I wouldn't trade that for the world. I think it's an excellent moral to have. And I have used that for basis of changing my major.
Remember, I just started college! Like 6 weeks ago and I am already changing my major! However, I am fairly certain that this is what I want to do with my life.
Questions: What do you want in YOUR life? Do you want to go to college? If so, what do you think your major will be? What is YOUR strongest passion?
Leave me some comments and let me know what you think about what I am doing, or what you are doing, and YOUR answers to the above questions! Have a great day and remember to pursue all that makes you happy in life! : )
Hey - just throwin this out there - my mom used to be a social worker; she got her degree in nutrition...not quite a doctor, but she wanted to help educate people about health and she was able to do so in a lot of places! (From vista to st. Louis to papa new guinea!) There are lots of ways to go about combining social work with something else - like youth, lgbt or something!
Wow, I love all of the different copmments! And I agree 100% with each of you! I am very proud of my choice to do social work. There is so much I can do with it. There is so much I want. But, more than anything, I want others to experience love and happiness and be able to take on the world. A lot kids and teens are not given this opportunity and I believe everyone deserves it. So... that is what keeps me going.
When deciding what I wanted to do with my life, not once did I consider the money. Money is a material object and if helping people paid absolutely nothing...I would still do it. Think about what YOU want to do. Money is great and all, but its not the most important thing. Be happy with your choice and know that you are doing something you love.
I think youth ministry is an excellent choice as well! Do what you love most and what you have a strong passion for. Like the quote, if you love what you do you will never have to work a day of your life...
I love your choice IdeeFixe: happiness. Excellent! Happiness is above all very important. If you arent happy with your life, whats the point. If you are not happy then you cant be living your life to the fullest.
And your strongest passion being to help others. I love that. I agree 100%. Sometimes people dont need help, they just need someone to be there and listen. I have experienced that myself so I know how important it is. I always do that. My friends ask me why I am so quiet and its because I love to observe everything around me and to listen to everyone. I learn SO much in one day just watching and listening to my surroundings.
Thanks so much for the input! Chase your dreams. And live your life happily :)
What do I want in my life?
Above all, happiness. I want to explore the far corners of the earth and get in touch with people that I normally wouldn't, even with this fine thing known as the computer.
Do I want to go to college? Major?
Eventually, I do, but right now sitting in class felt way too confining. I never was one to do what everyone else was doing. But I'm battling it out between being a Humanities major and a music business major. We'll see which one wins out in the end.
My strongest passion?
Helping people. I've always wanted to help others and that has never ever died down within me. But, if anything, I just want to listen to people while they talk. Sometimes people don't need help, but someone to just listen. I want to be that person.
What do I want in my life?
I want to lead a life committed to Christ.
Do I want to go to college?
Yeah, maybe in music, or youth ministry as a major.
What is my strongest passion?
Following God's leading.
What you are doing is awesome, keep going, get through college, and live your dream.
Wow, you sound like me with wanting to explore lots of different things! More power to you for deciding on something that you have a passion for :) That quote "If you do something you love, you never have to work a day in your life" comes to mind! Social Work, now more than ever, is becoming a 'hot topic' and needs more people like you involved!
As for me? What do I want in my life? I haven't decided that yet. Everyone has their standard outline of things they want (a college degree, a well-paying job, money, a family, health, etc.) That's all good. I have my major, Communications with emphasis in Public Relations, but where I want that to take me? I'm not sure yet. but I'm excited to see :)
