College Gossip Sites?

Posted on: March 09, 2010 at 08:20 PM
This is ultimately disgusting.

Websites devoted to trashing and blackmailing other students are starting to rapidly develop all over the web.

These sites let anonymous surfers post messages online about anybody they wish, saying whatever they wish, and get away with it.
Girls and guys alike are getting torn to shreds by college students they hardly even know, and in some cases, have never even met.
I learned of this trend a few weeks ago, when a girl from my sorority came into my apartment sobbing.  Apparently someone anonymously had mentioned her name, saying how she had no hope in life and that she had "been around" with frats.  Other web surfers on the site went on to comment on this post, trashing her even more, by pointing out her physical flaws and starting more rumors about her.
This had went on for three more blog posts, and over fifteen comments.

Now I know that it is controllable what people can say over the internet, but seriously, by the age of 19 and 20, people should be more mature than this.  It's disgusting to see such nasty comments coming from my peers, who I may see riding on the bus with me or sitting next to me in class.
In fact, last week I myself had witnessed a girl in my lecture hall posting a comment on the website herself.  This girl was not only one of the kindest girls in my class, but she was also my study buddy.  It scares me to think that such kind people in real-life could be saying such unfriendly and spiteful things online.

Please post your thoughts on this issue.  I feel it is something that has been going unnoticed for far too long.

My area's high schools were affected by something like this a few years ago, and it went to such an extent that a girl committed suicide. luckily because of their status as minors, the website could be closed down, but it did a huge amount of damage. I think an important idea may be to not fan the fire by giving them the attention they want...

Being in college, I've actually heard of this site and a few others like it. It's insane to me how people would even have the time to go on and talk about other people that they may or may not know. It says a lot about who those anonymous posters are, as students and as people. I wonder what kind of satisfaction the mean-spirited people get from spewing hate and negativity like this into the world. It's things like this that make me lose hope in my generation.

I haven't visited this particular site (I don't want to give them the satisfaction of more traffic), but I agree with you that it's upsetting how nasty people will be through the anonymity of the Internet. I feel that way whenever I read comments on blogs or forums where people are being outright cruel to each other, saying things they never would in person. Technology has given us many great advancements, but I really feel that it dulls our humanity sometimes.
