Union Square farmers market (green market)

Posted on: November 06, 2009 at 06:42 AM
At the beginning of my health module, my class and i went to the union square farmers market. I have shopped in that area before but i never actually took time to walk around the market. I had no idea it was so big. To be honest i thought it would be just like a new york city street fair thats all about food. I didnt think a place that sold food could be so intresting.
Our assignment was to interview 5 different people at different stands and ask them a minimum of 5 questions on anythin we wanted to know related to health and what they do to produce there product. My group and I asked some of the following questions, like if they have any other locations, if there farm sells organic food and if they thought there food was healthier then regular grocery stores. When askin all these questions with my group members, i thought it would be extremly boring but i found some of the answers to be fasinating.
The farmers market is always crowded no matter what day of the weekit is, even sundays when people rest its just an awesome place to be. Just looking at all the different types of food, all in one location is nice. Its a place of color, life and kindness. I felt like the kindness was being shown by those who make a living of selling at the farmers market. These people travel from all over the city and different states, and usually they are there all year round, or as long as the marker is opened.
The marker does have its downsides though. The fourth stand I went to was called the Cheerful Cherry. The name sounds happy, lovely and welcoming but the funny thing is the owner was the complete opposite. No offence to the woman but she should rename her stand. My partner made a joke and said she should rename it the grumpy cherry. This woman worked with her husband and when my partner asked the man if he wouldnt mind answering a few question, he pointed to a woman handing a customer a bag of food. When i approached the woman I asked her if she wouldnt mind answerin a few questions for a class health project. Her responce was that she hadent eaten breakfast and was tired so i had to make it quick. I told her i can ask someone else and she made it clear that I had already bothered her so I might as well finish the interview. It was funny because since I wasnt a customer and buying anythin I felt like she was rude for no aparent reason. Although one bad incounter wouldnt stop me from returning to the market next time im in that area.
