Last week during module we learned about tobacco. We learned how smoking tobacco affects the respiratory system. We looked at a slideshow that explained the disease that are caused by smoking. Such as different cancers which include stomach, lung and mouth. In one of the pictures of the slideshow they showed us, there was a healthy lung and lung that was affected by smoking was very black and looked dirty. After seeing the slideshow we answered questions about it.
In the afternoon we went to SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. We saw another slideshow that talked more about the affects of tobacco, we also saw statistics. The lady that was presenting to us gave us different cigarette advertisements. She then gave us an assignment to remake the advertisement and change them so that the slogan was going against cigarettes. All the posters were targeting a certain group of people. The cigarette companies try to be very persuasive. I worked with Elizabeth; our poster was of a hand, most likely male, holding a cigarette box called Gold Leaf. The slogan on top read “Taste the Flavor.” We changed the slogan to “Taste the Pain.” We also drew a cigarette with “KILLER” on the side and with the smoke puffs coming from it. Each puff cloud had a letter in it which read “Disease.” This assignment was fun to me, it was cool to see how people changed their advertisements. I enjoyed learning about this even though I knew some things about it already, but I still learned new things. This was a great experience.
