Description of Project*:

What do you propose doing to advocate for a better education or to improve the education provided at your school?

We are going to try to host a community Day of Action. We plan to have this event at MacArthur Park and we hope that there will be a large community turn out.  We want school marching bands to perform and have local shops provide most of the food.  We also hope to get students and teachers to speak and get everyone pumped about fighting these budget cuts on our education.  We will set up a booth where people can sign a petition against the budget cuts that we will send to the State Capitol.

Number of people expected to participate your project*: 500

E-mail Address*: barbie@gmail.com

Adult Ally

Address*: 1141 Benson Road

City*: Eureka     State*: CA    ZIP*: 97853

E-mail*: Pollypeppers@gmail.com

Cell Phone*: 555 -645-9558

Why did you choose this person to be your adult ally?* Ms. Peppers is the head of the PTA at our school and she is someone who is deeply involved in the community. She is a great adult ally since she seems to know a lot of people and would be able to get the word out quickly and efficiently. She had already agreed that the community needs to come together on an issue like this and thinks our idea is great!

MORE ABOUT YOUR PROJECT

Please answer these questions about your project. We don't want (or need) essays; just give us a paragraph or two that highlights the key points.

What is the expected outcome of your project? What do you expect to accomplish?*

The expected outcome is to have the our entire community together to advocate for education and school funding.  We want to have a day where people can learn more about it and try to come up with ideas about what they can do.  This is a community-building project between students, teachers, school staff and the larger community.

Who are you trying to influence with your project? Why do you believe that your actions will affect his/her/their opinion? (if applicable)

We are trying to influence and educate the community about what is going on in Sacramento and how the budget cuts will really effect us. We think that all the statistics that we show people will appall them and cause them to act or at least know what's going on.

Why is it important for this project to happen?*

This is very important that we educate the community about what is going on. We live in a fairly small community where there is a lot of news about what is happening locally but not a lot that is happening in other parts of the state.

What are the necessary steps to complete your project? When will they take place? Give us an idea of your timeline.*

We first will need to talk to a lot of community members to tell them about the budget cuts and get them excited about the event.   We can then see what they would be able to contribute to something like this.  We would like this to happen before school starts but close enough to leave a lasting impression on everyone who comes.

Think about who is involved in your project and list their specific responsibilities.*

We will have Barbie in charge of all the finances, other financial needs, and communicating with Right To Learn.  Lola and Robert will be in charge of talking to community members and seeing what they want to do. Kirk will be in charge of keeping track of everything from who's signed up to what we have bought and what we still need to buy.

How will your project have a long-term and positive impact on education in California?*

We hope that in Eureka we will inspire people to be more conscious of education not only locally but around the state.

PROJECT BUDGET

You must submit a proposed project budget with your application. Sample budget forms are available on the Right To Learn Web site at www.RightToLearnCA.org/grants in Microsoft Excel format.

Be sure to list as many things as possible (transportation, printing/signs/flyers, food, equipment, etc.) and a specific price for each. You can look in local stores or use Google to search for companies that sell the items you need to get an idea of prices. Also, think about whether you can get items donated or at a discount from local merchants. If you need more help with this part, ask your adult ally or get in touch with us at 415-375-3096.
