TEACHING AND LEARNING

This spring, thousands of students across California have joined with the Right To Learn campaign to fight for better public schools in our state. We now invite you to take the fight into your own hands, and we'll give you the money to get you started.

Apply for a grant of up to $5,000 from Right To Learn to continue your advocacy or start a program you school needs to improve the education it provides.

The application is short and more than $20,000 will be given away, so get your application in today and fight for your Right To Learn.

First, decide what you (and a group of friends) are really psyched about doing to advocate for a better education or directly improve your school.

You can do just about anything, but here are a few ideas to get your brainstorming started:
  • A rally from your community to Sacramento to advocate for state educational issues
  • A community-wide day of action to raise awareness and support for local education issues
  • A project to implement a peer mediation group on campus
  • A campaign to get ethnic studies class implemented in a particular school or in the district
  • A community gardening project that teaches gardening skills and trains youth on how to run a business
  • A peer tutoring program to help young people do better in school

We've put together some guidelines and sample applications for you to take a look at. All of these proposals were written by high-school and college kids and are great examples of the types of ideas we're looking for.

Example 1: Peer Mediation Group
Example 2: Community Day of Action
Example 3: Lobby Day in Sacramento

You must apply for a grant in a team of at least two people and if you're under the age of 18, you need to find a non-controlling adult ally to list on your application as well.

Once you've got those, download these two files, hit the Starbucks for a strategy session with your team, and get your application ready to submit electronically in Step 4.
  • Application Prep Form (PDF) - You have to submit your application electronically, but this document lays out all of the key facts and questions you need to be able to answer before you can apply.
  • Budget Template (XLS) - This isn't a long, complex form, but we have to know where you're planning to spend the grant funding. List your proposed expenses on this Excel document so you can e-mail it to us in Step 4.

Once you've finished your application and budget, you're almost done. Just do these two things to submit your electronic application. We'll get back to you in less than 10 days with a decision!

  • Step 1: Complete the electronic application. (If you worked through the PDF form, it'll be super easy!)
  • Step 2: E-mail your budget (in XLS format) to us at info@RightToLearnCA.org. Do not forget this step; we can't consider you for a grant without your application and budget.

If you have questions, please get in touch with us! We are looking for motivated students and are eager to do everything we can to help you through the process. You can e-mail us at info@RightToLearnCA.org or give us a call at 415-375-3089!
