ISSUES IN EDUCATION : TEACHING & LEARNING : WHY SHOULD WE CARE?!!!

WHY SHOULD WE CARE?!!!

By aquacat22 mail
The tardy bell tolls as students stumble on into class and find their seats amidst the clutter of the previous period. The teacher gets out of his chair looking just as beat down as the rest of us and manages to slip a video into the VCR and return to his chair. There are murmurs among the class as the movie begins and the teacher tries half-heartedly to calm them down. With little success he returns to his laptop and continues to venture through the vast depths of EBAY looking for his sailboat of choice, all the while ignoring the class. I look about at the classroom and notice a few students going to sleep, some listening to their IPODs, a couple of guys talking about their girlfriends, and a group of guys walking out the back door. After they left, I turned to the teacher and mentioned what I had seen. He looked at me with humor flooding his eyes and replied,"Why should I care?"

For the duration of the class period I tried in vane to find some comfort in the brutality of his response. Without any decent answer I began to ponder the question very thoroughly. Why should he care? Why should any of us care? Why do we even bother to come to class and hear the teacher ramble on about something that even he isn't enthused about? Is this what we've become? Is this the grand future we all have to look forward to? Is this what our predecessors will receive as payment for their toil?

The sad reality is yes. I'm not trying to throw a lampshade over the last bit of light, but it's true. This is what we've become. This is our fate that we have sealed upon ourselves and our benefactors with little hope for an easy improvement. We have betrayed ourselves, our parents, our own future for this country, and in turn the world, as well as our children and their hopes and aspirations for a better world. What are we going to do? We can't just sweep this under the stove and expect pleasing results to arrive within the week. We must take action NOW!!!

Get students involved by promoting school activities. Open up programs for possible career opportunities so students can visualize their futures and set goals for themselves, all the while being able to recognize their improvements and associate school with success. Create an environment where students can see the results of their labor and continue to challenge themselves in a productive environment. So what if this takes more funding? I can't think of a better place to begin changing our world than by investing in the leaders of tomorrow and their education today.
