Congratulations! Janet Lurssen, 25, of California has been declared the winner of the Burning Rubber contest hosted by YouthNoise. I interviewed her on Thursday, January 18, 2007, and talked to her about a few things.
Janet was handed an email printed straight off of her designer teacher’s computer; the email was about the Burning Rubber contest. Janet is unsure whether or not her fellow classmates entered the contest. When Janet was asked if she thought she’d ever win, she took a deep breath and replied, “No.”
The winning image was created using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Janet thinks that safe sex should be "as safe as possible." Although she doesn’t watch as much television as any "normal person" would, she does often read magazines. Janet believes that magazines promote safe sex very well.
| northstar316 asks, "Do they really make small condoms? Buying condoms in general is embarrassing on the best of days." |
Janet thinks teens don’t participate in safe sex because "our society is turning into an instant gratification society. We do things with out worrying about future consequences."
The winning image displays a tire. Janet wanted to "keep the image as obvious as possible...not abstract." She was inspired to participate in the competition because she "wanted her design to have an impact on society." In the end the message is the same: She wants people to "pick up a condom and actually use it!"
