Are Schools Breeding Grounds for Soldiers? - 10.06.2008
by jackthepumpkinking

It seems like every time we turn around, there's some military recruiter in our schools. Plus, there's the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) students have to take to see if we'd be good soldier material--and they end up calling your house all the time if you don't do well on it anyway. Why do we have so much time in our schools spent on military recruitment? Why don't we have recruiters from Microsoft giving us exams, or engineering recruiters in the halls every month? Do you think schools are simply a breeding ground for future soldiers, with indoctrination of patriotism as the womb and recruitment as the exit canal?

Good Soldiers are Good Students - 11.19.2008
The military is a wonderful thing. You make it sound like recruitment is a bad thing. Believe it or not, the military creates opportunities for many high school /college students to further their education. Ever look at the financial packages they offer to pay for schooling? As for the ASVAB... that is an optional test. If your school is forcing it upon you then be the conciencious objector who writes all C's for your answers. The military wants to see if you are smart enough to hack it in service. Its a skills test that can help people identify their strengths and place them in the right areas. I think schools should have more military recruitment in them.

I don't know where you go to school, but I've never heard of it that bad. Schools shouldn't be that tied to the military, period. At least it's not like in Darfur, where kids are in the military instaed of school.

Schools are not breeding grounds for soldiers, at least not my school. Plenty of people want to join the army, but I don't think it's because of the army's press campaign(honestly, have you ever seen the commercial where you get a free sports watch if you call for an information packet?). It's usually for the financial benefit, sense of adventure, or to put on a political resume, or for any number of reasons, but not because of "time in our schools spent on military recruitment"

During regestration in my school, they ask everybody if we would be interested in joining the military after high school. We have the option of say yes or no, but I don't believe that we should even be asked that question. School is to help us succed in the buisness world not the war zone. Where I live 99.9% of students are of a minority race, me included, most of our parents came from latin countries and about 30% of students speak spanish only, so when the documents are in english only, a vast majority will unknowingly say yes. So I believe that it isn't fair, and that the military and school should not associate in any way.
