Universal Healthcare: Sicko Strategy or Wellbeing for All? - 07.02.2007
By katalinacmnacha89

A recent poll published in the New York Times stated that "in the last two years ... 51 percent of Americans surveyed did not fill a prescription or visit a doctor for a known medical issue because of cost." As many as 47 million Americans lack health insurance, and health insurance in the United States is the most expensive in the world, averaging six to seven thousand dollars a year per capita. Furthermore, the US lags behind many other industrialized nations in life expectancy and infant mortality, partially because of the unavailability of health insurance to so many. However, implementing universal health care in the United States would mean a huge economic and political overhaul, and could inevitably result in corruption and abuse in the system as well as a major burden on taxpayers. In addition, 75 percent of surveyed Americans said that they were satisfied with their quality of healthcare. Should the US adopt a universal health care plan?
