Snowmen, sledding, resolutions, and family are supposed to be the goodies of the season, but Elvis wasn't making stuff up when he sang about having a "Blue Christmas." Winter is the season of sadness for many lonely teens, and drug and alcohol abuse and depression can escalate. A simple friendly ear or watchful eye could make the difference between life and death for many youths this winter.
In 2003, 46% of all fatal accidents were alcohol-related.
1.1 million youths meet the criteria for dependence on illicit drugs.
1 in 8 teens suffers from depression, but only 30% are treated.
Someone commits suicide every 18 minutes in the United States.
About 3 million youths think about or attempt suicide each year.
1 in 13 teens will attempt suicide this year.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death in youths ages 15 to 24, and the eighth in children ages 5 to 14.
The good thing is that 75% of those who commit suicide give warning signs to their friends or family members beforehand. Feel helpless about these stats? Turn your helplessness into hope by taking action!
If you suspect a friend or peer of drug or alcohol abuse or depression, alert someone immediately. Good people to tell are a counselor, teacher, or parent.
If you are suffering from depression or substance abuse, alert someone immediately and get help. There are also hotlines you can call anytime, such as 1-800-SUICIDE, 1-888-4-AL-ANON, and 1-800-ALCOHOL.
If your friend is having a tough time, be there to lend a hand-or even just an ear! Never leave a friend in this time of need. If nothing else, chat online or on the phone whenever you can just to be there as friendly support.
This winter, make your spirits bright by having a happy-and safe-holiday season, and make sure you share your joy with someone who could use a bit of that cheer, too.
