Before You Begin
Decide where you will collect the change:
- School
- Church/synagogue
- Community event
- Restaurants
- Supermarkets
- Retail stores
- Local offices
- Airports
- Intersection of a busy street
- One-time collection: this is most effective method when there is a group already gathered, like at an event or meeting. First, make a speech about the cause, pass around a collection basket, then announce how much was collected at the end of the event.
- Ongoing collection: this is when a container is left in a central location, such as a store counter, or a library for a period of time. Paste information about the charity on the container so the person giving change is informed. Since you have no face-to-face contact with your donors, you can make your collection more personal by including true stories or quotes on the container. Be sure to discuss security with the manager of the location before leaving a container.
- Person in charge of the hose
- Washers + Window cleaners
- Dryers/Waxers
- Money collector
- Traffic director
One time collection:
- Arrive at the event where you are collecting at least hour early.
- Assure that everyone is dressed appropriately.
- Provide all staff with information on the cause so that they can answer questions.
- Give a short speech on the purpose of your collection.
- Pass around the containers.
- Take the containers to the locations you have gotten approval to use.
- Put any literature on or next to the container.
- Empty the containers at an arranged time each week.
- Identify an ending date on the container
- Get coin wrappers from banks
- Wrap the coins and take them to a bank for bills
