Most 'a-thons' (e.g., walkathons, dancathons, telethons, etc ) are big events that require tons of work and lots or resources, so they're usually hosted by large organizations. Being a representative or part of another group from your school is a great way to help out. This way you can make a difference without doing everything yourself.
Before You Start
- Make a plan
- Volunteer to help when you hear about a charity hosting an a-thon (often you will receive flyers or hear announcements at school), call the contact.
- Ask what they need you to do.
- Recruit help friends, school clubs, religious organizations, your neighbors.
- Handout pledge forms
- Ask for pledges
- Advertise
Asking for pledges:
- Only ask for pledges in familiar places where you feel safe -- try to go with at least one other person
- Always be polite, even when someone refuses
- Collect pledges with your friends at a local store or sports event
- Approach local businesses for corporate contribution either in person or in writing
- Approach the media to spotlight your group's participation
- Explain what the money is being raised for (carry literature on the charity)
- More help on asking for pledges
