Jorge Lowe was born the fourth of seven children to his Latina mother and American father. His father was injured in the military and it was hard for him to find work. Their family struggled to survive all of Lowe's life, sometimes living out of friend's homes, and once, an abandoned school bus. No matter what happened, they always had each other, and Lowe grew up with a strong sense of family and responsibility.

Throughout his childhood, Lowe always managed to do well in school, as did his siblings. His mother had two priorities in life: making sure her children were healthy, and making sure they all escaped the life she had led. Sure enough, all seven of her children managed to create better lives for themselves. Lowe's sister Constance even works as a social worker, sometimes helping him with difficult cases.

Lowe was able to attend college with the help of a caring counselor, Susan Gillespie, who served as his mentor, confidante, and friend. To this day, Lowe visits Susan's grave twice a year-once during Christmas, and once on her birthday.

With three kids and one granddaughter of his own, Lowe stays very busy, but he loves to volunteer and does lots of after-school activities with his students.
