MyCauseIs :: Budget cuts in education

Why This Cause Matters Members: 23
submitted by lajlam
We are facing an economic crisis right now, so lowering spending at different levels is a must. But, the government is currently taking money away from our education system! This is supposed to be the place where young people gain knowledge and skills so that they'll be able to have good opportunities and jobs in the future, but if the government is taking money away from this system, then how will students have the resources to learn what they need to know?

budget cuts
I agree- budget cuts shouldn't apply to education. Our generation can't get a high education with the economy the way it is, & in my area (San Francisco & the greater Bay Area, CA) schools are so impacted where so many of us can't even get into classes we NEED. How many more cuts and sacrifices are WE going to have to make so the older generations can get what they WANT?

Why I Support This Cause!
Budget Crisis is a Joke!
The budget crisis is a joke because the schools and universities do have the money but it's an issue of appropriation. While it is obviously true that the education budget has been getting slashed for more than a decade, the money is still there! I go to UC Irvine and they claim they don't have money for various programs and can't give their custodial workers raises. But what is actually happening is that the Deans and CEOs are giving themselves raises and bonuses! The chancellor makes over 300,000 and the CEO of the Irvine hospital makes over 500,000. They're all getting raises that add up to tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars! It is both unfair and UNJUST for them to ask us, students, to bare with them and take the hit of the budget crisis when THEY'RE not doing all they can to help us out. Why can't they take pay cuts? Even if they lower their pays down to 100,000, I'm sure they can continue living a plush/above-average lifestyle while still helping out thousands of students and workers! We need to get more informed about what is happening and not simply accept what THEY TELL us!
