Why This Cause Matters Members: 16

When people try to explain hunger, homelessness, crime, etc, they often blame drug addictions and laziness. However, the truth is that education seems to play the biggest role. People who are born into poverty and never have the opportunity to receive a good education often stay in the cycle of poverty. People who do not receive a good education, for whatever reason, are often not equipped with the tools they need to succeed and survive in our society. It seems that a critical aspect of turning around the scary statistics of hunger, homelessness and crime, is education.

Take Action For This Cause
Ignite the Girl Effect
From CARE:

INVEST IN A GIRL AND SHE WILL DO THE REST.
What's the best investment in the world? Watch now to find out.

Imagine a world where girls are empowered to lift their communities out of poverty.

It can happen! Education is the key.

I want to show you a video that spells out how girls can be empowered to change their lives and their communities — and it all starts with education. Click here to watch "The Girl Effect" and then pass it along to your friends!

There are 72 million children not in school across the world, and the majority of these are girls. Yet investing in girls' education pays off in so many ways. When girls gain basic skills like reading and writing, they grow up to earn twice as much money as their peers without education. They have fewer, healthier children. And they are more likely to reinvest their earnings in their families and communities. That's the power of education!

Watch "The Girl Effect" video and then share it with your friends. By educating yourself and others, you will help CARE advance our work to empower girls in the fight against poverty.

CARE's global investment in girls' education includes:

* Building and renovating schools in Afghanistan to increase the 20% literacy rate among women
* Working with local teachers in Mali to create an innovative curriculum that teaches boys and girls the value of equality
* Ensuring indigenous girls in Cambodia receive a bilingual education — learning in both their native tongue and the majority language so that they gain the skills they need to succeed

Please, take a moment to watch "The Girl Effect" video and then be sure to share it with your friends. The world's next great leaders might be starting school today, thanks to you and CARE.

Together, we're making the world a better place for all.

Petition for an American Right to High Quality Education
Did you know that America's high school students finished 24th out of 29 countries in math and problem solving in 2003, or that two out of every three students cannot read at grade level proficiency? How about the fact that a student drops out of high school every TEN seconds, or that nearly 20,000 schools in this country have facilities found to be in inadequate condition?

OurEducation believes that all American children should have access to high quality education. In order to raise youth awareness, involvement, and demand for better schools, Our Education is running a ground-breaking petition campaign to reach out to millions of American students. The goal of the petition is for more than one million youth to stand up and make their voices heard by signing a petition in support of a constitutional amendment to guarantee all American children the right to a high quality K-12 education.

Why I Support This Cause!
Education solves problems
Today's youth need a better education so that we can deal with the slew of problems we will face when we are adults. Many of us are blessed with a good education, but many more of us cannot afford to attend good schools. The youth who must deal with the most problems, such as drug abuse, poverty, and homelessness, are those who do not have a decent education that could save them from those problems. We need to fight for improvement in education, especially for those who need it the most.
