Bottled water companies spend millions of dollars on advertising to convince us that bottled water is somehow cleaner and safer than tap water. But that’s not actually true. Tap water is regulated by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and is tested multiple times each day. Bottled water is regulated by the FDA (Food & Drug Administration); no government agency tests bottled water, and it is not tested at all after bottling or storage. The FDA has less than one full-time staff person in charge of bottled water. The plastic bottles contain chemicals that can leach pthalates, endocrine disruptors that may cause birth defects, cancer, and developmental problems.
Choose tap water over bottled water whenever possible; and Support policies that promote clean, public tap water for everyone, such as increased federal resources for communities and cities to upgrade their public water pipes and treatment plants. Use a safe, reusable, stainless steel water bottles and carry your water that way. (Food and Water Watch makes great ones!)
