Why This Cause Matters Members: 95
submitted by dclodfelter
One of the biggest things that helps the spread of HIV/AIDS is ignorance. People around the world are misinformed about how you contract the virus and what it means for a person to be HIV positive.

I encourage people join this cause and become catalysts in their own communities to help break down the stigma related with AIDS as well as challenge education methods that do not include information other than "abstinence only" as a means of prevention. Through proper, culturally sensitive education, we can help reverse the spread of an epidemic that infects more than 13,000 people in the world every day.

Take Action For This Cause
Stop Abstinence-Only HIV Education!

Demand an End to "Abstinence Only" Sex Education!
The requirement by Congress that at least 33 percent of US global HIV prevention funding be spent on abstinence-until-marriage programs is costing lives and must be permanently removed this year. These programs do not address the realities of the populations they target.

Please urge your Senators to co-sponsor the PATHWAY Act (S. 2415/H.R.1713) and support its provisions within the reauthorization of PEPFAR. These critical steps are necessary to remove the 33 percent funding requirement and allow for comprehensive HIV prevention programs that meet the real life needs of women and youth.

Win a trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the third annual One Voice: Reproductive Health and Population Summit
Enter an essay contest for youth advocates!

Are you interested in learning more about sexual and reproductive health and rights? Would you like to bridge the divide between domestic and international advocacy efforts around issues like international family planning, comprehensive sexuality education, and environmental protection? If you answered yes to both questions, then the One Voice Summit is the conference for you!

There is a direct connection between the health of communities around the planet and the health of our earth's environment. Today, more than one billion adolescents are entering their reproductive years. At the same time, we face an increasing lack of access to reproductive health information and services, as well as global challenges like water scarcity, global warming, and poverty. The choices this generation makes will have an impact on our world for years to come.

We invite youth advocates ages to tell us in an essay of no more than 500 words about the potential roles youth can play in advocating for a more just and sustainable world, where all people have access to sexual and reproductive health services and a healthy environment. Tell us how if you are chosen to participate, you would use your experience from the One Voice Summit in Washington, D.C. to create change and further dialogue on these issues in your school, campus, and/or community.

To qualify, contestants must be between the ages of 16 and 24, currently reside in the United States, and demonstrate a passion to work on issues of sexual and reproductive health and rights and the environment. One reference is also required.

The winning contestants will be flown to Washington, D.C. for the One Voice Summit taking place April 11-April 14, 2008. Accommodations and meals will also be covered.

CONTEST DEADLINE IS WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2008 at 5pm.

Why I Support This Cause!
It's not 'just an STD'
My sisters bio-mom has AIDs b/c she used dirty needles and now she is almost blind and her legs are too weak to support her weight. She is in her early 30s and is going blind and, while not technically paralyzed, is confined to a wheelchair. One day my sister mentioned that her mother had AIDs and this really ignorant guy avoided her like the black plauge, like if my sister breathed on him he would get it! People need to learn, early in life, how to prevent HIV/AIDs, how it endangers them, and that most contact with infected people is perfectly harmless. They are not lepers, they are people who made mistakes, people who are victims of a disease that stops their body from protecting itself. They are just people, who are sick, and should be understood.

Raise Aids Awareness!
People need to be taught on hw AIDS spreads and how to prevent it. They also need to know how bad it is. People need to stay safe and watch what they do...quit sharing needles and having sex with no protection or knowing the persons background first.
If we could raise awareness, we would have less of an empidemic, that would even dissapate to nothing. :) Be careful and make wise choices, get educated about AIDS>

speak out!
my aunt just recently passed away from aids.
she was young and conceived it from using drugs.
i think it is very important that we widely educate people about aids and hiv and that we regularly get tested for these viruses.
i think if we spread awareness the virus will decrease in our population.
